Pickleball FAQs: Quick Answers for Curious Players

Your top questions, answered in plain English (and a little wit).

🟢 Rules & Gameplay

It’s the non-volley zone — 7 feet from the net on both sides. No smashes allowed in the kitchen, but snacks are optional.

Yes. In pickleball, “on the line” = “in.” Those edges are your friends.

Yep. Always underhand. The paddle must contact the ball below your waist (navel level).

After the serve, the ball must bounce once on each side before volleys are allowed. Think of it as a mandatory warm-up rally.

🟣 Equipment & Gear

Outdoor balls usually die faster (thanks, asphalt). Expect 3–10 games before cracks or “egg shapes” show up.

You can, but court shoes are better — they grip without tripping you.

Close cousins, but not twins. Pickleballs are sturdier, with specific hole patterns for indoor vs. outdoor play.

Technically, you can play with a cutting board if you want, but regulation paddles make life easier (and quieter).

🟠 Scoring

Standard games go to 11 points, win by 2. Tournaments often play to 15 or 21.

Nope. Only the serving team scores. Sorry, defense doesn’t pay in pickleball.

It’s the server’s score, receiver’s score, and server number (1 or 2 in doubles). Yes, it sounds like a math problem, but you’ll get used to it.

Take a breath and reset — scoring mistakes happen to everyone. If the rally is played out, the score stands as played.

🟡 Culture & Etiquette

If others are waiting, yes. Don’t be a court hog — it’s called community play for a reason.

Unless you enjoy making enemies, yes. Play to your partner’s and opponents’ levels.

Return them — gently. Firing a 100 mph serve back across 3 courts isn’t cool.

Actually, the opposite. If it’s close and you didn’t clearly see it out, give the benefit of the doubt in.

🟢 New Player Questions

Flip a coin, spin a paddle, or arm wrestle. Winner chooses serve or side.

Yes. It’s sneaky cardio with less impact on your joints than running. You’ll break a sweat without breaking your knees.

100%. That’s part of the magic — it’s one of the few sports where 10-year-olds and 70-year-olds can go head-to-head.

Nope. Learn the basics (serve underhand, double bounce rule, kitchen). The rest will click as you go.
