Pickleball FAQs: Quick Answers for Curious Players
Your top questions, answered in plain English (and a little wit).
🟢 Rules & Gameplay
What is the “kitchen” in pickleball?
It’s the non-volley zone — 7 feet from the net on both sides. No smashes allowed in the kitchen, but snacks are optional.
Can the ball hit the line and still count?
Yes. In pickleball, “on the line” = “in.” Those edges are your friends.
Do I have to serve underhand?
Yep. Always underhand. The paddle must contact the ball below your waist (navel level).
What’s the “double bounce rule”?
After the serve, the ball must bounce once on each side before volleys are allowed. Think of it as a mandatory warm-up rally.
🟣 Equipment & Gear
How long does a pickleball last?
Outdoor balls usually die faster (thanks, asphalt). Expect 3–10 games before cracks or “egg shapes” show up.
Can I wear running shoes on the court?
You can, but court shoes are better — they grip without tripping you.
Are pickleballs the same as wiffle balls?
Close cousins, but not twins. Pickleballs are sturdier, with specific hole patterns for indoor vs. outdoor play.
Do I need an official pickleball paddle to play?
Technically, you can play with a cutting board if you want, but regulation paddles make life easier (and quieter).
🟠 Scoring
How many points do you play to?
Standard games go to 11 points, win by 2. Tournaments often play to 15 or 21.
Can you score points if you’re not serving?
Nope. Only the serving team scores. Sorry, defense doesn’t pay in pickleball.
Why do people call out three numbers when scoring?
It’s the server’s score, receiver’s score, and server number (1 or 2 in doubles). Yes, it sounds like a math problem, but you’ll get used to it.
What happens if I mess up the score call?
Take a breath and reset — scoring mistakes happen to everyone. If the rally is played out, the score stands as played.
🟡 Culture & Etiquette
Do I really have to rotate in and out of games?
If others are waiting, yes. Don’t be a court hog — it’s called community play for a reason.
Is it rude to smash the ball at beginners?
Unless you enjoy making enemies, yes. Play to your partner’s and opponents’ levels.
What do I do with stray balls?
Return them — gently. Firing a 100 mph serve back across 3 courts isn’t cool.
Should I always call close balls “out”?
Actually, the opposite. If it’s close and you didn’t clearly see it out, give the benefit of the doubt in.
🟢 New Player Questions
How do I start a game?
Flip a coin, spin a paddle, or arm wrestle. Winner chooses serve or side.
Is pickleball good exercise?
Yes. It’s sneaky cardio with less impact on your joints than running. You’ll break a sweat without breaking your knees.
Can kids and seniors really play together?
100%. That’s part of the magic — it’s one of the few sports where 10-year-olds and 70-year-olds can go head-to-head.
Do I need to know all the rules before playing?
Nope. Learn the basics (serve underhand, double bounce rule, kitchen). The rest will click as you go.
